Heart of London area exceeds pre-pandemic footfall levels during The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations

Unsurprisingly, the Heart of London area has had a strong weekend of footfall, with an increase of 14% from its previous week (compared to the wider West end that experienced an 8% rise overall).

Heart of London partook in Jubilee celebrations, which started on Thursday, with Union Jack flags taking to the skies above Piccadilly, St James’s, Regent Street & Bond Street. Festivities continued into the weekend, with the Jermyn Street Jubilee Fete on Saturday 4 June.

Helped in part due to Heart of London’s proximity to Buckingham Palace, Horseguard’s Parade, and Pall Mall where the Jubilee celebrations were focused, Heart of London area saw the highest footfall numbers than the rest of the West End.

Compared to pre-pandemic levels, Thursday saw the biggest increase in footfall, 7% more than the 2019 baseline, meaning that footfall average for the whole week reached levels only 6% below pre-pandemic numbers. The second-largest increase was Wednesday which could be due to an increase in tourism as people arrived in the area a day in advance. This also brought Wednesday’s footfall back up to pre-pandemic levels.

One area that saw a slight downturn in footfall was Leicester Square which was down 17% compared to 2019. This is likely due to people avoiding the area who were not visiting central London for the celebrations.
