The nationwide Best Bar None scheme has been launched in Westminster for the first time, with licensed premises in the West End introduced to the national award that recognises good practice across the industry and enhances destination experience for consumers.
Westminster City Council are fully supporting the launch of the initiative to help make the West End a safer area and to further boost the local economy. Created as part of the Westminster Licensing Charter, the council has teamed up with Heart of London Business Alliance to roll out the initiative with businesses around Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, enabling all stakeholders to work together to help reduce alcohol-related crime and disorder.
The official launch of the initiative was on Monday 30 October, ahead of another planned launch of a Best Bar None initiative covering the London Bridge and South Bank area. It is being supported by the Home Office and will work in partnership with local government agencies including the Metropolitan Police, authorities and local businesses to create a benchmarked standard of quality to promote the responsible management of licenced premises.
Nickie Aiken, the leader of Westminster City Council said: “The Best Bar None scheme will play an important role in recognising the achievements of good premises and will help to drive high standards, changing the relationship between the council, police and industry.”
Lord Smith of Hindhead, Chairman of Best Bar None added: “Helping to tackle crime, disorder and under-age sales, Best Bar None will help to create a safer and more responsible alcohol-related leisure environment that encourages people of all ages to socialise.”
The initiative is accredited by Heart of London Business Alliance and our Business Resilience and Night Time Manager, Rico Pieri added: “We are delighted to be launching the first Best Bar None accreditation scheme in Westminster. The first industry-led scheme will help businesses in the evening and night-time economy raise standards and will also promote responsible management.”
The launch was also attended by representatives from Novus, Mitchells & Butlers, JD Wetherspoon, TGI Fridays, Greene King, Hippodrome Casino, Platinum Lace, Ruby Blue, Criterion Hotels, Edwardian Hotels, Maxwells and McDonalds.
